http://carolinegoularddvmcva.blogspot.com/ is getting a new home!
Welcome http://pawsbackinmotion.blogspot.com/
After many years of providing holistic consultations for all types of illnesses, I have decided it was time to further focus my practice. PAWS BACK IN MOTION is just what it means, getting critters back on their feet and moving. For some it will be learning to walk again, for others it will be to achieve their best performance in their favorite canine/feline sport. I am really passionate about taking care of mobility issues and hope my positive attitude (read pawsitive) will be contagious to you and your pet.
Same phone number, same person, same personalized service
I will keep this site up so people can go back in the archives and look at all the fun cases and text I wrote.
Thank you again to all of my clients for choosing my services!

Self confidence
Last weekend I met Elisha. This beautiful 7 yrs old merle Great Dane has been down for about a week now. The owner called me and told me he can’t get up to go to the bathroom or walk. He is about 130 pounds, and you can imagine how this situation could turn into a nightmare if we could not get this kid to get up. I was a little suspicious I might not be able to help Elisha. I discuss with the owner (Cindy) the fact that such a large dog being down, would need several daily turnings to avoid bed sores, very large cushy living quarters and a lot of maintenance to avoid urination and defecation bed sores. However, the owner said: “let’s see what your evaluation says, if we think he needs to be at the hospital afterward or may need surgery, I’ll do so”.
Elisha has different neurological issues since a baby. Cindy has even driven from Orange County to Indiana to get gold beads implants in his neck years ago, which helped him out tremendously.
I could see he had enough motor control to attempt to make him stand up. The owner told me Elisha tends to be a “scardy cat”. So we supported him with home made slings and with just to 2 of us, we coaxed him to the side of the bed and up he was. This first attempt was clumsy, but we tried again and when I knew he was sure footed, I let go of the sling and up he was. His owner was almost in tears, laughing and crying at the same time, she could not believe her dog might once more walk again. Elisha was surprised, but a little scarred and was happy to be shown back to the bed.
I am doing acupuncture and physical rehabilitation to speed up the healing process, give him the strength and confidence he needs to get back up. To see Cindy’s reaction when we got him up was priceless. Yeap that is why we are veterinarians!
Courage, confidence and will are part of the genetic code. For those, that might not have has much of it, it is our job to cherish and nurture an environment that will encourage healing and positive mental attitude.
When I came in, Elisha was on the owner’s bed with plastic sheets and puppy training pads, which Cindy was religiously replacing as needed. There was not even a sore on his skin; obviously, Cindy was doing a great job of taking care of his needs. I could see him moving with his front legs on the bed, and almost made it up on his 4 feet, but it looked like there was a little bit of lack of confidence on his part.

Emma
Talk about flat feet. Emma is this sweety elderly Greyhound I see once in a while for a maintenance acupuncture session. She got entangled in her leash and tore the Superficial Digital Flexor tendon of the 2 middle digits of her left front leg. We are wishing a speedy recovery...

Nature's Variety recall
Lincoln-based Nature's Variety is voluntarily recalling packages of its chicken-flavored pet food over concerns of salmonella contamination.
The company says in a statement issued Thursday that no pets or humans have been sickened.
Included in the recall are three-pound packages of chicken medallions, six-pound packages of chicken patties and two-pound packages of chicken chubs, all with a best-by date of Nov. 10, 2010.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Kitty News
This was the week of the cat. I got several calls of cat owner’s looking for acupuncture/holistic care.
Marguerite, Cassie's owner knows she hates needles and was concerned about her response to my treatment. We took things very slow, and knowing her dislike of needles, I was able to modify my approach. She was fantastic and she fell asleep during my treatment. Here is a picture of Cassie right after I removed the needles.

Canine Rehabilitation internship
I just came back from my internship in canine physical rehabilitation in Chicago, which is part of my certification to be a CCRT (Certified in Canine Rehabilitation Therapy). I had the privilege to observe the physical therapists, animal technicians and veterinarians work as a team on every canine physical rehabilitation cases. As the week unfolded, some cases really gets to your heart like Harold, the dog who was condemned to never walk again after back surgery. Well, check the youtube videos and judge of his progress for yourself.

Never give up is the word of the day :-)
And Trio, the Pit Bull with one real leg amputated at 4 weeks old because she was used as bait in an illegal dogfight. The present owner was working at a rescue organisation, saw the young pup in a shoe box and immediately fell in love with her. Trio now needs a cart to get around and wrists warps due to over loading her front legs. The owner has now started a fund to helps homeless pets who needs medical care. http://www.trioanimalfoundation.org/ .

Recent loss
My deepest sympathy to Sammy's family. He had a rapid deterioration of his spinal condition and had to be put to sleep.

Do not forget to participate in the current poll.
He has a weight on the left hind leg for a specific exercise we are teaching him.

Patients
Here is a picture of Hannah, which is now recovering nicely from pain in her lumbo sacral region and some ataxia in her hind legs. We also discovered some neck pain. Hannah is now very active, and I need to tell mom and dad to be careful about slowing her down if needed. Hannah did not respond well to antiinflammatories (she got side effects); Dr Sultzer from Laguna Hills Animal Hospital recommended I did an evaluation to see what I could do. I have been treating Hannah for the last 1 1/2 month once a week and we are now trying to see if we can increase the interval between treatments. she has been treated with a combination of acupuncture, laser therapy and some canine physical rehabilitation techniques.
Here is a picture of Keenan I started to see for his hip dysplasia. He is about 80 pounds of pure joy. He is sooooooo friendly.
